MONTH AHEAD CALENDAR: July 1 - 31, 2009
The American Center will devote the month of July to programs connected to the 40th anniversary of man landing on the Moon. Through film screenings and exhibitions we will go airborne and travel to the far reaches of outer space. Be sure not to miss the highlight of all anniversary events – a multimedia program with the Czech astronaut society and witnesses of Apollo 11 launch in 1969.

§                Documentary movies celebrating the 50. years of NASA On request we will screen new documentaries during July and August, Monday-Thursday, 1 p.m.- 4 p.m.,  American Center Library, only in English

WHEN:     10 a.m.

WHAT:    Whistleblowers:  How They Protect the Public Interest    discussion  

Who are whistleblowers ? Why is it important to protect them? How do they protect the public interest? Under what circumstances will people either act on the spot to stop illegal and otherwise unacceptable behavior, or report it? Who should be covered by a whistleblowing policy? What are best practices in countries with a developed whistleblower tradition? These questions will be addressed by three of the foremost experts on the topic – Stephen Kohn (National Whistleblowers Center), Danielle Brian (Project on Government Oversight), and Beatrice Edwards (Government Accountability Project). The discussion will be moderated by David Ondráčka, Director of Transparency International Czech Republic.

 

The discussion takes place as a as part of a larger, multi-regional roundtable on enhancing whistleblowers protection.

 

The event will be in English.

WHAT:     Space Movies Series: The Golden Anniversary of NASA   film screening

For 50 years, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration has led the United States and the world on an epic journey of exploration and discovery. This documentary spotlights NASA's expeditions and innovations of the past five decades from launching astronauts into space, through studying stars to helping to better understand our home planet.  
 The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

WHEN:    Thursday, July 16,  5.30 p.m.

WHAT:    Apollo 11: Once upon a time on the Moon   multimedia program

On July 21 1969, man stepped on the Moon. Astronaut expert Tomas Přibyl will discuss the 40th anniversary of this event as well as the entire Apollo project. The lecture will be followed by a round table with Jan Kolář, Antonín Vítek and Karel Pacner - leading Czech experts and journalists who brought the news about the mission to the Moon to the Czech public.  Furthermore the American Center will offer a special exhibition and new NASA video documentaries.
The program will be held in Czech.

WHEN:    5 p.m.

WHAT:     The Presence Consequences of the End of the Cold War    lecture

A lecture by Igor Lukeš, an American historian with Czech roots and honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Boston, will focus on the consequences following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the changes that have occurred in the ensuing twenty years.
Lecture will be held in Czech.

WHEN:    6 p.m.

WHAT:    Space Movies Series: 2001 – A Space Odyssey     film screening

 
This legendary science fiction film, done in collaboration by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, changed the definition of the genre forever. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) charts a chronicle of human evolution from the dawn-of-man to the journey of the spaceship Discovery. The movie also features the famous HAL9000 computer, machine far more human than its creators intended, leaving a warning about artificial intelligence. Even though the real year 2001 ended up being remarkable for events quite different from space exploration, the movie remains a landmark of science fiction.
The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.
 Admission to all events is free of charge.

WHAT:    Chicago Movies Series: The Blues Brothers  film screening

John Landis´ 1980 film "The Blues Brothers." After the release of Jake Blues from prison, he and brother Elwood go to visit the old home where they were raised by nuns. They learn the church stopped its support and will sell the place to the education authority, and the only way to keep the place open is if the $5000 tax on the property is paid within 11 days. The brothers decide to put their blues band back together and raise the money by staging a big gig. Will they make it in time?
The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

Snímek Johna Landise "The Blues Brothers". Poté co je Jake Blues propušten z vězení, navštíví se svým bratrem Elwoodem domov, kde byli oba vychováni řádovými sestrami. Když se dozvědí, že církev přestala domov podporovat a hrozí mu vystěhování pokud nezaplatí 5000 dolarů daně do 11 dnů, rozhodnou se znovu založit svou starou kapelu a peníze získat z velkého koncertu. Podaří se jim to včas?
 
Film bude promítán v angličtině s anglickými titulky, vstupné je zdarma.

American Center Event - Obama's Foreign Policy: continuity in change / AARO 3rd Thursday

Dear AARO Members,
FYI.
Many thanks to all those who came and made yesterday's picnic such a special afternoon. I think all will agree that we were well looked after by the staff of Zofin Garden Restaurant. It is planned to move the monthly 3rd Thursday gathering to this venue if there are no objections.
Re: June 3rd Thursday - As it falls so close to the Summer Picnic, I propose to leave the next gathering until July 16th. If any members would still like to meet this coming Thursday, please do let me know and I will reserve some space.

WHAT:    Chicago Movies Series: SCARFACE  film screening

The original 1932 version of "Scarface", directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson. Big Louis Costillo, the last of the old-style gang leaders, is slain, and his former bodyguard Tony Camonte is taken into custody. Since Costillo's body has never been found, the police have to release him, though they strongly suspect Johnny Lovo paid Tony to remove Big Louis. Tony begins taking over the rackets in town with violent enforcement, and he becomes a threat to Johnny and the other bosses unless they work for Tony. Their dissatisfaction and the relentless pursuit of the police push Tony towards a major confrontation.

WHAT:    Discover Chicago  multimedia program

This multimedia program will include historian František Hanzlík; art historian Otto Urban; performer Boris Hybner; and, via a digital videoconference, Marek Skolil, the Czech consul in Chicago. Actors from Pardubice will perform parts of the hit musical "Chicago." The program will also highlight Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games

The program will be held in Czech.

CO:      Chicagské filmy: SCARFACE  filmové promítání

Americké centrum v červnu promítá významné americké filmy související s Chicagem.  První z nich bude původní verze filmu Scarface z roku 1932 v režii Howarda Hawkse a Richarda Rossona. Big Louis Costillo, poslední z gangsterů staré školy, je zavražděn a ve vazbě se ocitá jeho tělesný strážce Tony Camonte. Protože se Costillovo tělo nenašlo, je Camonte propuštěn, i když panuje silné podezření, že svého šéfa odstranil na popud jiného gangstera, Johnnyho Lova. Tony začne násilně přebírat vládu nad městem a začne ohrožovat Johnnyho a ostatní mafiánské bosse. Jejich rozhořčení spolu s policejním pronásledováním nakonec Tonyho dotlačí k velké konfrontaci.

Film bude promítán v angličtině s anglickými titulky, vstupné je zdarma.

Hosty multimediálního pořadu o Chicagu budou brněnský historik František Hanzlík, zabývající se životem krajanů v USA, historik umění Otto Urban, dále pak nejznámější český mim Boris Hybner a český konzul v Chicagu Marek Skolil. Součástí pořadu budou také ukázky z nového nastudování muzikálu Chicago Pardubického divadlo.
