U.S. Embassy Warden Message
Hells Angels Motorcycle Club 'World Run' in Prague

This Warden Message informs American citizens that the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club will hold its 'World Run' in Prague from Friday, May 28th through Sunday, May 30th.  The event will be held in a tourist camp at the Divoká Šárka Park and could attract over 2,000 Hells Angels members.  Czech Police will be closely monitoring the gathering and are expected to have a sizeable protective presence.  Most Hells Angels members are expected to stay within the venue, but groups could travel to local bars in the area or to downtown tourist zones.  Beginning Friday, May 28th, police will place motorcycle checkpoints near park entrances along Evropská Street, to control movement into and out of the location.  Vehicular travel along Evropská Street is expected to remain open throughout the event, although periods of traffic congestion are possible (particularly on Friday and Sunday when the majority of arrivals and departures are anticipated).

The 'World Run' occurred in Prague without major incident five years ago; however, Hells Angels members have been involved in violent altercations since the inception of the club.  American citizens are urged to use caution when in the vicinity of the Divoká Šárka Park, as well as the McDonald's Restaurant near the entrance to the park for the duration of the gathering.  American citizens are also urged to exercise caution while traveling on Evropská Street near the park, within tourist zones of Prague, or while in any other areas where potentially unruly groups may be present.

You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the Embassy's website.  You can also get global updates at the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information.  If you don't have Internet access, we have a call center for updates--1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

AARO - Summer Picnic - June 19th, Zofin Garden Restaurant

Dear AARO Members,

Following the success of last year's summer event, we are returning to Zofin Garden Restaurant for our annual Summer Picnic, one of the most popular AARO events of the year. We have reserved the pavilion bandstand for the afternoon of Saturday June 19th from noon, on offer will be a high-class, all-you-can-eat buffet with unlimited beer, wine and soft drinks. Buffet comprises grilled meats and fish, salads, pizzas, pastas, cold dishes and various delicious desserts. Vegetarians will be well catered for, and you really can help yourself to as much or as little as you feel like.

Those who attended last year will remember what a pleasant afternoon it was, watching the boats on the river, letting the world go by. In the event that Mother Nature has something other than sunshine in mind, we will be under cover but rain or shine, there are few better places in the center of Prague to spend a summer afternoon in good company, eating and drinking to your heart's content. The restaurant has a well-equipped play area for younger children, plus a playground right next door, all in view of the pavilion, so parents can keep an eye on their charges without worry.

There is no charge for paid-up AARO Members, you may also invite guests at a cost of 450 CZK per head. In addition, we are offering a special rate for new members who join at the event - receive 6 months AARO membership at the discounted cost of 1,400 CZK for a couple or family, or 1,200 CZK for an individual. This will also include the Picnic, so no additional fee will be required for those who join on the day.

Please rsvp no later than Monday May 31st to this address, thank you.

It is 1943 and the Germans are winning the Second World War as the U.S. suffers huge losses on the ground and in the air. Four newly recruited pilots are united by a desire to serve their country. At a time when black flyers are not welcomed in the Air Force, the men called "The Tuskegee Airman" could earn respect, save lives and help win a terrible war; their failure, however, could destroy more hopes and dreams than their own.

The movie will be in English, following discussion in Czech.

WHAT:     DOUBLE INDEMNITY      Film screening

"How could I have known that murder could sometimes smell like honeysuckle?"

Directed by Billy Wilder and adapted from a James M. Cain novel by Wilder and Raymond Chandler, Double Indemnity represents the high-water mark of 1940s film noir urban crime dramas in which a greedy, weak man is seduced and trapped by a cold, evil woman amidst the dark shadows and Expressionist lighting of modern cities.

Movie veterans Stanwyck, MacMurray, and Robinson give some of their best performances, and Wilder's cynical sensibility finds a perfect match in the story's unsentimental perspective, heightened by John Seitz's hard-edged cinematography. Double Indemnity ranks with the classics of mainstream Hollywood movie-making.

Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.

The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.

Jane Greer: Oh, Jeff, I don't want to die!

Robert Mitchum: Neither do I, baby, but if I have to I'm gonna die last.

Out of the Past is so perfect a film noir that it is considered practically a textbook example of the genre. In his first starring role (it had previously been offered to John Garfield and Dick Powell), Robert Mitchum plays Jeff Bailey, the friendly but secretive proprietor of a mountain-village gas station.

Jeff has his mysterious past catch up with him one day when he's ordered to meet with gambler Whit Sterling. En route to the meeting, he tells girlfriend Ann his story…

In 1991, Out of the Past was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The movie will be screened in English with English subtitles.
