U.S. Embassy Warden Message
Expected Political Demonstrations in Downtown Prague

This Warden Message informs U.S. citizens that political demonstrations are expected/scheduled to occur on Saturday, May 1st, in the vicinity of Náměsti Republiky metro station and Masarykovo Nádraži (Masaryk railway station).  The potential exists for violent confrontations involving left- and right-wing political organizations.  Pedestrian zones between, within, and around these stations, to include the area near the Palladium shopping center, are locations of particular concern to Czech law enforcement authorities.  American citizens and their families should exercise caution and avoid these areas or any other impromptu gathering or transit sites where potentially unruly groups may be present.

You can stay in touch and get Embassy updates by checking the Embassy's website.  You can also get global updates at the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs website where you can find the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information.  If you don't have internet access, we have a call center for updates--1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. and Canada, or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

For after-hours emergencies, please call the U.S. Embassy in Prague at +420-257-022-000.

AARO - 3rd Thursday - Today

Dear AARO Members,

Possibly record short notice, but 3rd Thursday is today. Space is booked from 6pm this evening in the non-smoking section of Restaurace Braunuv Sklep, Karlovo namesti 24, Prague 1 for those who would like to gather.

One topic of discussion is a new concept for 3rd Thursday, Member's Hosting proposed by Don Hill. The idea is that each month an AARO Member volunteers to be the host of the monthly meeting. The evening can then be planned according to their wishes - choice of venue, theme for the evening, guests to be invited etc. It could be a debate, a DVD screening, a boat trip, a comedy sketch - whatever you would like, the only restriction is that the cost of the event for other Members remains on a par with an evening in a mid-priced restaurant.

It is proposed to relaunch 3rd Thursday in this fashion starting from May. Your feedback and ideas are welcomed as always. If anyone is ready to volunteer to host a 3rd Thursday, please notify the Board at this address - we are ready to help you plan your custom evening.

Your AARO Board

AARO - Norbert Theo Auerbach - In His Own Words - April 20th 2010

Dear AARO Members and friends,

AARO Prague is pleased to present an evening dedicated to founder member Mr. Norbert Theo Auerbach, who passed away in Prague in December of 2009 at the age of 87. Among many positions he held during a long and successful career in the movie business, he was President of United Artists for which company he was a pioneer in the business of international motion picture distribution. He returned to his childhood home, Prague, in 1989 just before the end of Communism and became a prominent figure in social and business circles. He was a key element in the boom in foreign films shooting in Prague during the 1990s; served as a consultant to Barrandov Studios, Lucerna Film (which became Bontonfilm) and numerous other companies; was a founder member of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Czech Republic, and of the Prague chapter of the Association of Americans Resident Overseas. He was an active philanthropist, a loyal friend and a generous mentor who is fondly remembered and missed by many. His social grace, his ability to charm in several languages and his wonderful sense of humor and fun, impressed upon all those who had the good fortune to meet him.

Norbert Auerbach was a great teller of stories and anecdotes, but rather than try to do him justice in the same way, we will be screening two documentaries about his life, and so will let him tell his story in his own words.

- Confessions of a Hollywood Mogul - dir. Alena Činčerová - 14 mins (ČTV) (in Czech w/ English subtitles)

- From Bohemia to Hollywood and Back - dir. Miloslav Šmídmajer - 56 mins (ČTV) (in Czech w/ English subtitles)

Both directors plan to attend and say a few words about their films before each screening.

This event is meant as an opportunity for all of those who knew Norbert Auerbach to come and remember him, and for all of those who are curious to know more about this extraordinary man.

When: Tuesday April 20th, 18:30
Where: American Center of the US Embassy
Tržístě 13, Prague 1

Please rsvp to aaroprague@pragmatica.cz by Monday April 12th - this event is free of charge and open to all, but space may be limited.

This event is organized by the Association of Americans Resident Overseas, with the kind support of the American Center of the US Embassy, Prague.
