CALENDAR for the MONTH AHEAD: August 1 - 31, 2009

August is a very exciting month at the American Center. First, we welcome astronaut Andrew Feustel and his wife Indira at a special public event in our garden. Then another distinguished speaker, professor emeritus Edmund Lambeth of the University of Missouri's prestigious School of Journalism, visits to discuss how electronic media are changing the way we get our news.  Still talking media, we will premiere The Paper, a documentary about the modern American newsroom. On the last day of August we invite all friends of the American Center and their families to enjoy the music of Rolnicka Praha, a youth chorus returning from an overseas tour, who will help us conclude the summer season and open our fall schedule. There will be a special surprise for kids, too: Portuguese Water Dogs, the same kind recently made popular when the Obamas added one to their family in the White House.

Directed by Alan J. Pakula and based on the Woodward/Bernstein book, All the President's Men won four 1976 Academy Awards. The film explores a working newspaper where the mission is to get the story – and get it right.

In the Watergate Building, four burglars are caught in the act when the lights go on unexpectedly, setting off a chain of revelations that drove a U.S. President from office. Washington reporters Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) grabbed the story and stayed with it through doubts, denials and discouragement. All the President's Men is their story.
